14 January 2025 National Portrait Gallery, London. Press Event with MP for Bath Wera Hobhouse
We were a-flutter with excitement on 14th January as we joined Visit West in the gracious surroundings of London’s National Portrait Gallery to celebrate the launch of Austen250. We had people dancing with delight at the prospect of coming to Bath to take part in our two six-day parties in April and October! After all, it is such a happiness when good people get together.
“I started thinking about how we could commemorate this very special year in early 2023. From the outset, I felt our events should be fun, immersive and appeal to Janeites of all kinds. Now, finally, Jane Austen’s 250th anniversary year is here and the celebrations can begin! Dr Gabrielle Malcolm, an expert academic in the Georgian and Regency period, has curated two six-day programmes with much to enjoy from experts discussing topics including Jane’s life, Regency card games and make up to embroidery and dancing workshops. And there will be plenty of fizz too!
Attending the event at the National Portrait Gallery with Theresa Roche, our expert Strictly Jane Austen guide, along with museums, attractions, local tourist offices and enthusiastic journalists and writers was a wonderful way to launch our celebrations. We can’t wait to welcome guests to Bath.” Theresa McDermott, CEO
